Overnight Full Closures of Topanga Canyon Blvd (SR-27) for Slope Repair

Special To Topanga Journal

Motorists will be detoured to Malibu Canyon Road and Las Virgenes Road

Full overnight closures of Topanga Canyon Blvd (SR-27) between Pacific Coast Highway (SR-1) and Grand View Dr. near Jalan Jalan, Imports will take place from 10:00pm to 5:00am daily beginning Monday April 29 though Thursday May 2. CalTrans is closing TCB at night to repair and restore eroded slope embankments along the highway. This year, the hillsides along TCB had multiple rock and debris slides onto the highway, triggering full closures of TCB, sometimes for days.

Overnight Full Closures of Topanga Canyon Blvd (SR-27) Next Week

Special To Topanga Journal

Motorists should expect full closures of Topanga Canyon Blvd (State Route 27) the week of April 8 through April 11 from 10:00pm to 5:00am, said the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) in an announcement. The closure will take place from the Pacific Coast Highway to Grand View Dr., near Jalan Jalan Imports, for an emergency repair and restoration project of the slopes after a winter of hard rains that have eroded the embankments along SR27 in Topanga.

There have been multiple rock and debris slides here that have shut down the highway for full and partial closures many times for days over the winter and spring.

CalTrans warns traffic will be diverted to Malibu Canyon, the 101 and Las Virgenes as alternate routes. Motorists should expect long delays and are strongly advised to use these alternate routes or avoid Topanga Canyon Blvd altogether. The Town of Topanga is still open for business during the closures. Motorists can access Topanga from the Valley side of Topanga Canyon Blvd to visit the businesses of Topanga.

55 Hour Closure of Topanga Canyon Blvd Between Jalan Jalan And PCH

CalTrans announced a 55 hour full closure of Topanga Canyon Blvd (State Route 27) between Jalan Jalan near Grandview in Topanga and Pacific Coast Highway. The closure will begin Friday July 27 at 9:00 pm and end Monday July 30 at 5:00 am.

During the full closure, Topanga Town is still open for business.

“Motorists should expect delays and are strongly advised to use alternate routes or avoid the area. Additionally, the California Highway Patrol will be assisting with traffic control and detouring traffic in the area,” said Eric Manjivar, Public Information Officer for CalTrans District 7.

Joseph Rosendo, the Topanga Chamber of Commerce Community Liaison, and Roger Pugliese, Chair of the Topanga Association For A Scenic Community, Director at Large with the Chamber, both have been hard at work communicating CalTrans on the closure.

“Caltrans has been planning and coordinating with State Parks, County and State elected representatives, the Topanga Chamber of Commerce, the Topanga Association for a Scenic Community and other Topanga organizations to do Emergency repair work on Topanga Canyon Boulevard. The planned work will take place at mile marker 1.0 and mile marker 1.2. These locations are across from the K-Rail and fencing that was put up within the Scenic Highway after the winter mudslides,” said Rosendo to his Chamber members in their communications about the closure. “Beginning next Monday July 23rd Caltrans will begin transporting material to the sites between 9am until 2pm, which may require the closure of one lane of the boulevard near the sites periodically during the week.  A coordinated effort using Caltrans flagmen will be made to move traffic through the sites as quickly as possible.”

CalTrans signs advising motorists to use US 101, Las Virgenes Road, and Malibu Canyon Road as an alternate route are already in place at entrances to the Canyon.

“In addition, during the closure signs and personnel will be stationed at Fernwood Pacific and TCB and Grandview and TCB alerting drivers to the congested driving condition on both of those roads and suggest travelers take alternate routes to PCH, such as Malibu Canyon, Kanan Dume Road or using a combination of the 101, 405 and 10 Freeways,” said Rosendo.

The Topanga Chamber of Commerce emphasized Topanga Town is still open for business during the closure.

“People will be able to get from the Valley via Topanga Canyon Blvd and Old Topanga Canyon to Topanga’s shops, restaurants, library, art galleries and other businesses,” said Rosendo. “Theatrical Botanicum’s repertoire of plays will continue as scheduled, weddings and receptions planned for the Inn of the Seventh Ray and 1909 will also go on as planned. Once again, there will be open access to all Topanga businesses from the valley! The complete closure is from Jalan, Jalan to Pacific Coast Highway only, and only from July 27th from 9:00pm to Monday July 30 at 5:00am.”
